CANYON, Texas – Senior
Zach McLeod delivered a walk-off double that scored
Nick Borowski from second base to give Colorado Mesa an 8-7 win over St. Edward's on Saturday at the NCAA South Central Region Championships at Wilder Park.
With the win, Colorado Mesa moves into Championship Sunday for the second straight season.
The Mavericks got on the board in the second inning after
Johnny Carr tripled to right field, scoring Borowski and
Garrett Ball on the play, giving them a 2-0 lead.
St. Edward's evened the score in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run single by Robbie Lammons.
Colorado Mesa moved ahead in the fourth inning after
John Ballard's infield chopper plated two followed by a
Hunter Douglas RBI single to right field scored another to make it 5-2.
Once again the Hilltoppers answered back on a Will Hairston home run to left field made it 5-4 Mavericks heading to the bottom of the fifth.
McLeod continued his banner day after belting a RBI double to left field to give the Mavericks some short-lived breathing room at 6-4.
In the sixth inning, Douglas reached on a fielding error by the HIlltopper first baseman that allowed
Johnny Carr to score on the play giving CMU the 7-4 advantage.
Colorado Mesa headed to the ninth inning with a three-run lead, but St. Edward's scored three times in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 7-7.
Both teams were in the bullpens at this point and both bullpens were outstanding.
The Hilltoppers trotted closer Jake Davis out to the mound. Davis went six and two-thirds innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, walked none and struck out seven. The lefty retired 12 in row between the eighth and 12
th innings.
The Mavericks countered with
Will Dixon in relief of
Chris Ramirez. Dixon went four innings and allowed two runs on three hits, walked three and struck out two. The outing was the longest of his career.
AJ Landis followed Dixon on the mound and earned the win. Landis (6-2) allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out five in his four innings of work.
In the 12
th inning with one out,
Nick Borowski laced a double to left center field to give the Mavericks a runner in scoring position for the first time since the eighth inning. McLeod stepped to the plate and grounded a ball up the middle after following off three pitches, giving the Mavs the walk-off win.
McLeod finished the day 3-for-4 with a run scored and two runs driven in while
Garrett Ball went 3-for-6 as well.
The Mavericks are now 42-15 on the season while St. Edward's season ends with a record of 34-21.
Colorado Mesa will square off against the Colorado School of Mines at Noon central tomorrow regardless of the outcome of tonight's game between the Orediggers and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
