Grand Junction, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University Football Team won their second game in a row, beating Adams State in a wire-to-wire 54-17 win here at Stocker Stadium.
Senior running back
Aiden Taylor scored three touchdowns, all of them coming in the first half, grabbing a new career high for a single game. The Mavericks would go on to notch five more touchdowns in the game, scoring on eight of their 11 possessions.
In the first quarter, defensive back
Kash Bradley fielded the opening kick four yards in his own endzone, proceeding to take it back 68 yards to put the Mavericks in plus territory for their first possession. Taylor would have runs of 14 and 22 yards, scoring his first touchdown of the night.
After Colorado Mesa's defense and linebacker
Braylon Sugg would force a punt, the Maverick offense would be forced to start a drive inside their own 10. Quarterback
Cole Hansen and wide receiver
Trek Keyworth would connect on a go route for 91 yards, scoring CMU's second touchdown of the night.
The Grizzlies responded on their following drive, but a
Brandon Belgrave 21-yard carry and a Taylor 13-yard touch set up Taylor's second touchdown scamper of the night, going five yards to the house. Mesa notched 211 yards of total offense in the first quarter alone, holding the Grizzlies to just 106.
On the first play of the second quarter, the Adams State QB broke a Keyshaun Ceasar sack attempt, before throwing it right to Bradley for the only pick of the game. CMU would start with another short field, where Taylor punched in his third and final score of the night. Adams Sate would score a touchdown before forcing their only punt of the night, which led to a half-ending field goal.
To start the second half, linebacker Cooper Connelly would grab a piece of the punt attempt, starting two straight halves in Grizzly territory. Running back
Myles Newble would take three straight handoffs inside the 15, capping the drive with yet another Maverick touchdown.
Defense continued to shine, with defensive lineman
Easton Fuentes forcing a fumble, and linebacker
Jake Sinz scooping it for a 16-yard score. Belgrave would tack on one more third quarter score, taking it nine yards up the middle for the seventh CMU touchdown of the night. The Grizzlies did not cross midfield in the penultimate quarter.
The Mavericks brought in their second team for most of the fourth quarter, with quarterback
Bronco Hartson tossing a touchdown to linebacker
Will Reeves who was lined up as the fullback.
CMU amassed 513 yards of total offense, with 357 on the ground and 156 through the air. Taylor finished the game with 127 yards on 17 carries, leading the field inn both attempts and yards. Hansen finished the night going 6-9 with 140 yards and touchdown, with Hartson finishing 2-2 with 16 yards and a passing touchdown of his own.
NEXT GAME UP
The Mavericks will be back on the road next week, heading to Las Vegas, New Mexico to face the Cowboys of New Mexico Highlands at 1 P.M.. NMHU is currently 3-3, coming off a 37-20 loss to Chadron State. CMU will return to Stocker for their homecoming game the following week against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks.
