Mavs add Division I transfer

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University indoor and beach volleyball teams have added a Division I transfer in Kasie Gilfert who has enrolled at CMU and joined the Maverick programs for the Spring 2018 semester, Head Indoor Coach Dave Fleming and Head Beach Volleyball Coach David Skaff have announced.

The former Northern Arizona University player will compete for the Mavericks' beach volleyball team this spring and will have a full four years of eligibility.

The Parker, Colo. native and former Legend High School standout also has three years of indoor volleyball eligibility remaining after playing in 13 matches and making one start against Hawai'i for the Lumberjacks last fall.  She is a 6-foot middle blocker and opposite.

After redshirting at NAU in 2016, Gilfert played in 34 sets and totaled 35 kills and 19 blocks last season.  She had a season-high eight kills against Utah State.

While at Legend High School, Gilfert was a Second Team CHSAA Class 5A All-State selection and was named as the team's MVP twice.  She was a 4-year starter for the Titans and tallied 266 kills (2.5/game) and 144 blocks (1.3/set) while hitting .341 as a senior in the fall of 2015.  As a junior in 2014, she set school's single season records for hitting percentage (.428) and blocks (158).

"We are excited that Kasie will be joining our program.  She is a strong physical presence at the net.  She jumps well, has a good arm swing and is a very good blocker," Fleming said.

"With continued hard work and her competitiveness, Kasie could make a big impact.   Our goal is to compete for championships and Kasie will help us get closer to that goal," Fleming added.

Gilfert also set Legend's squat and power clean records and was the track and field team captain for two years.

She also played club volleyball for Coach Sherri Hawkins and Colorado Juniors and was a state champion in four different events for her club track and field team from 2009-12.

Academically, Gilfert is majoring in social work and was a recipient of the Golden Eagle Scholar Athlete Award while at NAU.

The daughter of Marie Gilfert, she has three younger siblings (Treyton, Kaia and Tazeya).

Why Gilfert Chose CMU: "I chose CMU because I love the area and environment of it.  When I was deciding on schools, I wanted to make sure that everyone liked where they are and enjoyed being there everyday.  Everyone that I asked said they absolutely loved it."
