Mavericks Advance to NCAA Region Title Game

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University baseball team continued to work some magic in coming from behind for the third straight game in the NCAA South Central Region Tournament. This time they came from behind against the West Texas A&M Buffs and won 9-6, moving them into the Region Championship Game and one win shy of reaching the Division II World Series in Cary, N.C.

Garrett Woodward provided the heroics in the game. With the Mavericks trailing 6-5, Woodward stepped to the plate with two runners on and worked the count full. On the 3-2 pitch, Woodward sent a Josh Weyker fastball over the left field wall for a three-run home run and an 8-6 Maverick lead.

Nate Robertson finished the game 4-for-5 with a run scored and a pair of runs driven in. Robertson delivered an RBI double in the eighth inning to add an insurance run for Colorado Mesa.

The Mavericks got on the board in the first inning after Sergio Valenzuela singled up the middle, Garrett Carpenter and Austin Kaiser delivered back-to-back bunt singles. Robertson delivered a RBI single to right field followed by an RBI groundout for Jordan Liester. Derrick Garcia stepped up and flew out to left field for a sacrifice fly and a 3-0 lead.

Senior Kyle Davis got the start for Colorado Mesa and took his start into the seventh inning before giving way to the bullpen. Davis went 6.2 innings and allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits, walked two and struck out three to earn the no decision.

Tyler Ehlers picked up the win in relief and Trent Allianic earned his second save of the season, pitching the final two innings of the game.

Colorado Mesa improved to 43-10 on the season and stayed a perfect 30-0 at home.

The Mavericks will play Texas A&M-Kingsville tomorrow at 12:00pm for the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament Championship. The Mavericks fell to Kingsville last season in the Region Tournament, 3-0.

This will be Colorado Mesa's third time in the Region Title game with the Mavericks winning the title in 2009 defeating Wayne State (Nebraska) at Suplizio Field.
