The second day of the South Central Regional tournament took place Saturday evening inside Brownson Arena at Colorado Mesa University. The first of two semifinals played Saturday was between the Metro State Roadrunners (22-8), and the Midwestern State Mustangs (25-5) from the Lone Star conference. Metro pulled the upset Friday beating out three seed St. Mary's, while Midwestern State beat Texas rival Tarleton State to advance to the semis.
The start of the game saw scoring tough to come by. As Metro State saw the first points of the game thanks to a jumper by Kirstin Valencia, both teams were struggling in finding a way to the basket.
Kirsti Degeila from Midwestern started led the scoring when it did finally start. Degeila had 13 points in the first half, including a last second three pointer to send both teams to halftime. The Roadrunners were led in scoring at the half by Amy Nelson who posted eight points, two blocks and three rebounds for Metro. Despite Nelson's efforts, the Roadrunners could not break 20 points in the first half.
The Roadrunners offensive woes continued in to the second half. Nearly five minutes passed in the second half before Metro added to their point total, thanks to a jumper from Tai Jensen. Another minute and a half would pass before the Roadrunners would score again.
The Midwestern State Mustangs saw a successful and easy second half on the way to the semi-final win.
Kirstin Degelia would finish the game with 20 points, two steals, and three rebounds. Andrea Carter had 15 rebounds, and 11 points when time ran out.
The Mustangs beat the Roadrunners 66-52.
The Mustangs will advance to the regional championship game Monday night. They will play the winner of the Colorado Mesa, Texas-Permian Basin game.
